Youth
and Wisdom
“Youth and Wisdom” is a scene of two men on a narrow flat-bottomed
boat on a river in southwestern Nepal. The Nepali youth plays his flute,
moved by the ominous storm building in the distance. Although it is late
afternoon, the brewing storm and thick fog creates an early and dramatic
sunset. The older Nepali man is the river boatman. He counts people boarding
the small boat and prepares to push the boat across the wide shallow
river with his bamboo cane. The painting symbolizes the exuberance and
passion of youth with the responsibility and stability of older age.
Both ages and temperaments are appreciated and recognized as worthy.
